Some useful information for your visit to Oakwood

  • Your pet has been referred to Oakwood for further assessment, investigation and treatment of your pet’s condition. At Oakwood the clinicians have expert knowledge of their field and are experienced in the investigation and management of more complex conditions. We aim to provide a professional, personal and friendly service of the highest standard. Our goal is to restore our patient’s quality of life whenever possible. We operate from a purpose built hospital premises approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the British Veterinary Hospitals Association. We are proud of our great team of dedicated and experienced nurses working to the highest standards of patient care. Nursing care is provided 24 hours a day.

Following a consultation and discussion with the referral vet, the clinician may recommend admission of your pet to the hospital or to perform further tests. In order to do so your pet will need to have had all food taken away at 10.00pm the day before the appointment since blood tests or an anaesthetic may be required as part of the investigations or management.

We will report to you by phone as soon as practical on the progress of your pet. If you haven’t had a call and were expecting one just give us a ring to check if we’ve been trying to contact you. You are welcome to phone on a daily basis to check on your pet’s progress. If one of the veterinary surgeons is unavailable due to other case commitments, you can get an update from our nursing team. For long stay patients visiting can be arranged by prior appointment.

After any diagnostic or surgical procedures animals stay at Oakwood Veterinary Referrals until the clinicians are satisfied with their recovery.

We will also report directly to your vet.

What to expect when you arrive at Oakwood

When you report to reception you will be asked to fill/hand in a registration form. You should also hand any reports and/or x-rays to the reception staff. A consultation will last from 30-60 minutes depending on the discipline you are referred to.

Most surgical cases will be admitted the same day for surgery to be carried out the same day or possibly on the following day. The clinician may decide to carry out further tests which might mean that your pet will only be a day patient. We may also decide to repeat tests previously carried out by your vet; we do this so that we have the most up to date information on your pet’s condition.

Most patients will be hospitalised, sometimes for a few or even several days after any surgical procedure. It is important to remember that recovery after sedation/anaesthesia or surgery will vary from patient to patient and will depend on the procedure(s) carried out. After any diagnostic or surgical procedure all patients will stay at Oakwood until we are satisfied with their clinical recovery.
