We aim to contact you within 24 hours of receiving the referral. Ideally we will offer an appointment within 7-10 days. Urgent or emergency referrals are prioritised and would be offered an appointment sooner than this depending on the urgency of the case.

On the day of your pet’s initial consultation please bring with you your completed registration form, your pet insurance documents and of course your lovely pet.

When your pet is ready to go home, a discharge appointment will be made with either a nurse or the vet. During this appointment you will be instructed on any special care and medications your pet will require.

You will be given a written copy of the discharge instructions detailing the post operative care and medications to be given along with the appropriate medications.

If you have any concerns regarding your pet after you return home you can always give us a call on 01606 723222. Our phone lines are answered 24 hours a day.

Your general practitioner vet may make a recommendation based on a number of factors. However ultimately the decision on where your pet is referred to is your own.

Oakwood Veterinary Referral’s aim is to provide a caring, professional and friendly service of the highest standard. Our goal is to maximise our patients’ return to a good quality of life with the minimum of suffering wherever possible.

Unfortunately this is not something that we can guarantee as there are so many different types of insurance policy and your policy may even be specific to your pet. If you have a concern regarding your insurance cover we would recommend that you give your insurance company a call and discuss the situation with them. Some insurance companies offer a pre-authorisation service. If this is something your insurance company offers and you would like use, we are more than happy to assist with this.

This is offered at our discretion, but as long as we have received all your insurance information in advance of the appointment and have run a series of checks to confirm the details of your policy, in most cases we can then arrange a direct claim.

If your pet is insured and we have agreed to do a direct claim with your insurance, we would ask you to pay any policy excesses plus any amounts that fall outside of your policy limitations.

If your pet is not insured or a direct claim has not been agreed we would ask you to pay for your first consultation in full at the time of the appointment. If your pet subsequently is admitted for treatment you may be asked to leave a deposit towards this. The remaining balance is to be settled at the time of discharge.

Your pet will not be left on their own whilst hospitalised. Our ward has a nurse present 24 hours a day and a Veterinary Surgeon will be on the premises 24 hours a day. During their stay with us the ward nurse will make sure they are fed and receive all the required treatment and care until they are ready to go home.

All vets that qualify from university are qualified to be veterinary surgeons and provide veterinary care to animals. But vets can go on to study a number of post graduate qualifications. The highest of these usually leads to them becoming a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons recognised specialist or a European Board of Veterinary Specialisation recognised specialist. At Oakwood referrals our clinical team is led by RCVS and EBVS recognised specialist.

This needs to be arranged through your own registered vet. Let them know you would like them to refer your pet to Oakwood Referrals and they can contact us directly to arrange to send over all the required information.
